Protests spread vs Joma arrest
August 30, 2007
Various groups in the Philippines, United States, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Europe today launched protests actions against what they decried as the “unjust and politically-motivated” arrest of National Democratic Front Chief Political Consultant Jose Ma. Sison.
Groups led by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and the International League of Peoples Struggle held a picket protest in front of the Netherlands embassy in Makati. Similar protests were also held in Dutch embassies and consulates in different countries.

Bayan chair Carol Araullo said that the arrest of Sison will be met by widespread opposition by freedom-loving peoples of the world. Sison is also the chair of the International League of Peoples Struggle, an anti-imperialist formation with members spread across the globe.
“The Arroyo government is sorely mistaken when it thinks that it can intimidate the peoples’ movement for national liberation and democracy. This whole incident will backfire on the Arroyo regime and the war-mongers in her cabinet. The whole world is seeing the insincerity of the Philippine government in pursuing the peace negotiations,” Araullo said.
“We can very well add this incident to the long list of human rights violations of the Arroyo government. The filing of trumped up charges has been one of the means used by the Philippine government to harass its critics. It has failed before and we expect it to fail again,” she added.

More protest actions are expected as Sison faces the Dutch courts on Friday as part of his continuing investigation by Dutch authorities.
“From what we have gathered, it is clear that the Dutch and Philippine governments are trying to deal a serious blow not just to Sison but to the entire NDF peace panel based in the Netherlands. This is a well-coordinated effort aimed at pressuring the NDF panel to surrender or face more serious attacks,” Araullo said.
“Now that the Arroyo government has admitted to having played a role in the arrest of Sison, it is clear that the regime really has no intention of talking peace. It is only interested in waging all out war. This is not just about Joma now. This is an attack on the Filipino people and their aspirations for a just and lasting peace,” Araullo said.
